Maywood man faces attempted murder charge

A man is facing three felony charges, including attempted murder, after he allegedly stole a man’s car and hit him with it before battering a woman and a police officer late Friday night in the Loop, Chicago police said.

Maurice McDowell, a 43-year-old Maywood resident, faces felony charges for attempted first-degree murder, vehicular hijacking and aggravated battery of a peace officer, police said. He also faces misdemeanor charges for assault, battery and resisting arrest.

McDowell is suspected of hijacking a 36-year-old man’s vehicle in the first block of South Wabash Avenue at 11:48 p.m. using force, police said. He then battered a 45-year-old woman and officers when they attempted to arrest him 10 minutes later.

There were two warrants out for McDowell’s arrest when he was taken into custody, police said.

McDowell is due in court Monday.
