Mega Mart, a Korean chain grocery store, is now open in East Palo Alto, with a ribbon-cutting and grand opening ceremony held this morning.
The 50,000-square-foot store, which replaces a Target at that location that closed last year, includes groceries, a large Korean beauty section and more. Instagrammer Tony Nguyen, who goes by the handle @yourglobalfoodiebff, shared a sneak peek of the store, highlighting the house-made kimchi, a deli offering ready-to-eat items like kimbap, and the Pogu Picnic takeout counter offering fast-casual meal boxes called “dosirak” from Michelin-starred chef Tony Yoo. There’s also Basquia, the brand’s gluten-free rice flour bakery.
On the grocery front, look for the produce aisle with Korean fruits like shine muscat grapes, the ramyun section (including a selection co-branded with the popular Netflix movie “K-Pop Demon Hunters“) and the large meat aisle containing many items cut for easy transformation into Korean barbecue at home.
The chain has several other Bay Area locations. Its ownership also runs Jagalchi, a Daly City Korean cuisine megastore — named after the eponymous renowned fish market in Busan. Jagalchi opened in March and has a number of shared features, including Basquia and the sit-down restaurant version of Pogu.
The company started in Busan, Korea, in 1975, and operates additional Mega Mart locations in Fremont, Sunnyvale and Atlanta.
Details: Open today 10 a.m.-9 p.m. and 8 a.m.-9 p.m. daily after that at 1775 E. Bayshore Road, East Palo Alto.
