Metra has unveiled a specially painted train for Veterans Day that’s set to enter service later this month, the transit agency said.
It features a bald eagle on the front, with American flags and blue camouflage silhouetted with military figures saluting on the sides. It is set to start service on the Rock Island Line, moving to the BNSF and the Milwaukee District lines in December before serving three Union Pacific lines in January.
Locomotive 120 first entered Metra service in 1977.
“Metra has strong ties to our nation’s armed forces,” said Jim Derwinski, Metra’s CEO and executive director, in a statement. Derwinski is a Navy veteran.
“This eye-catching design is another way to express our gratitude for the service of all veterans and for our employees’ continued service to the people of Northeast Illinois.”
Currently, 300 veterans work for Metra, Derwinski said.
The recent paint job was done during Locomotive 120’s fourth rehabilitation in its 47 years of service, the agency said.
“This eye-catching design is another way to express our gratitude for the service of all veterans and for our employees’ continued service to the people of Northeast Illinois,” Metra CEO Jim Derwinski, a Navy vet, said.
