Footage has shown the shocking moment a car was pulled off railway tracks after being crushed by a train at a crossing.

The black Suzuki SUV was removed after it was hit by the 0908 train from Saltburn to Nunthorpe by Redcar Central station yesterday, near Middlesbrough.

The crumpled bonnet of the car was photographed barely hanging on – with the front bumper dragging along the ground.

Passerby Stanley Binns, 75 – who captured the footage – said: ‘I took the video from the top of a supermarket car park which overlooks the crossing.

‘The accident had already happened, people told me it happened about an hour before.

‘They reckoned the crossing light wasn’t working and the driver drove on and the train hit the side of it. When I got there you could see the end of the train sticking out.’

Network Rail staff were on scene to clear the area after the accident.

Karen Duffy, Operations Director for Network Rail’s North & East route, said in a statement: ‘Following a low-speed collision between a train and a car at West Dyke Road level crossing, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch have opened an investigation and we will support them throughout this process.

‘Thankfully, there were no injuries to people in the car, the train, the general public or railway colleagues, and I am grateful to the police, paramedics and other emergency services who responded to the incident with speed and professionalism.

‘Both the road and railway are now open again, albeit with disruption likely for the rest of the day to the trains.’

In 2022, shocking footage showed the moment a police car was hit by a train on a railway crossing – with a woman handcuffed inside.

The officer driving the car had left it parked on the tracks with Yareni Rios-Gonzalez, 20, handcuffed on the back seat.

She suffered multiple broken bones and a head injury when the freight train smashed into the vehicle on September 16 in Weld County, Colorado.

About 20 seconds later an officer then repeatedly began asking if Rios-Gonzalez was in the car, to which another replied ‘Oh my God, yes, she was.’
