Mother drowns saving son in Des Plaines River near Libertyville forest preserve

A Monday autopsy determined a 31-year-old mother who jumped into the Des Plaines River, saving her son, died of drowning, Sunday night near a Libertyville forest preserve.

The death of Angelina Khalimendik, of Hinsdale, was consistent with drowning, according to a statement from the Lake County coroner’s office.

Around 7 p.m., Khalimendik entered the river at Independence Grove to help her son, about 6, and after helping him reach a family member, she slipped underwater, the Lake County Forest Preserve said.

A family member and others nearby helped pull her out and she was taken to the Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where Khalimendik was pronounced dead, officials said.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death in the Des Plaines River near Libertyville on Sunday evening. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” said Ron Davis, Lake County Forest Preserve police chief.

The incident remains under investigation by the Lake County Forest Preserve Police and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
