Oakland man killed by store owner in botched Southern California robbery

Authorities identified the man shot and killed by a Norwalk store owner during an attempted robbery as a 25-year-old Oakland resident.

Sheriff’s officials also released more details about the Aug. 6 botched robbery at Classic Tobacco in the 10900 block of Firestone Blvd.

The shop owner was opening his business for the day when Rodney Gaston approached the front door carrying a large canister of pepper spray and a handgun, according to a Sheriff’s Department statement.

Two men followed Gaston at a distance.

Gaston pepper sprayed the store owner, who fired one round from a handgun, striking Gaston, the statement said.

The three suspects ran, with Gaston later collapsing. Deputies found him lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to the torso. He died at a hospital.

The two other suspects ran into a residential area northeast of the shopping center, where they were found. The Stockton and Oakland residents were arrested.

Booking records show both men posted bond and were released.
