OAKLAND — A pedestrian trying to cross an East Bay freeway died early Monday after being hit by a vehicle, the California Highway Patrol said.
The collision happened about 5:40 a.m. on southbound Interstate 880 at the S. 16th Avenue off-ramp just north of the Embarcadero. Authorities did not identify the pedestrian immediately, pending the investigation and notification of relatives.
Initial reports confirmed by the CHP said the pedestrian tried to cross the freeway from the right-hand side while trying to get to the center divide area. That person wound up down in the far left lane.
The CHP issued a Sig Alert for severe traffic at 6:15 a.m. and advised motorists to use Interstate 580 as an alternative.
