Spoons have long been the utensil of choice for pudding lovers.

Now thousands of Germans have launched a daring rebellion against this centuries-old norm.

They’ve begun eating dessert pots with forks – and no one knows why.

The trend has taken the country by storm, with young people gathering at parks across the country to take part in the bizarre spectacle.

Dubbed ‘Pudding mit Gabel’ (Pudding with a fork), the craze is set to come to the UK on Tuesday this week, with an event being held at midday in Trafalgar Square.

It is believe to have started in the city of Karlsruhe in south west Germany.

A flyer inviting strangers to come together to eat desert with the utensil was spotted online and shared by a local member page.

The idea soon spread like wildfire, with thousands of youngsters meeting in cities and towns throughout Germany and Austria, such as Hamburg, Hanover, Vienna and Berlin.

Social media has flooded with videos of people chowing down on the pudding pots, which are particular popular in Germany.

What’s even harder to work out is why the absurd trend has won so many people over.

Some participants have pointed to cost of social activities and the rise in loneliness among Generation Z (those born between 1995 and 2010).

Mehran Nadimi, who runs the karlsruhe.memes page, which kickstarted the trend, told t-online: ‘We found the idea so charming and funny, so we thought: Let’s post something about it.’

He said many came to the fork-gathering alone and met new people there.

‘What we took away from this: Pudding connects people,’ read the caption for one of his videos from the Karlsruhe meet up.

As another fork user put it: ‘Eating pudding with a spoon is crap, eating pudding alone is crap.’
