Pepperdine’s Waves of Flags 9/11 Remembrance held on Thursday in Malibu

Pepperdine University held its 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Thursday at Alumni Park in Malibu. The ceremony included remarks by the university’s Chancellor Sara Young Jackson and with readings and reflections on the tragic events of September 11, 2001 by members of the Pepperdine community, including alumni.

The keynote speaker was actor Dennis Quaid, who was the narrator of the documentary film “Twin Towers: Legacy” and has supported the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which helps families of first responders.

Six hundred attendees were seated up the hill at Alumni Park where the annual Waves of Flags display is located, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The remembrance was live to watch for those who couldn’t attend: https://www.pepperdine.edu/waves-of-flags/watch-live/

The Waves of Flags is up through Sept. 26, until volunteers lower the flags beginning at 10 a.m. that Friday.

In addition to the annual flag display and the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, the private Christian university has a permanent 9/11 remembrance, the Thomas E. Burnett Jr. Heroes Garden.

Burnett (MBA ’95), a Graziadio Business School alumnus, was among those aboard the fourth hijacked jetliner, United Airlines Flight 93. Burnett and other passengers led a revolt against the hijackers but the plane crashed into a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania (Flight 93 National Memorial Pennsylvania: https://www.nps.gov/flni/index.htm).
