Plane crashes near busy Scots airport as emergency crews scramble to scene

A PLANE with two people onboard has crashed near to a busy Scots airport sparking a major emergency response.

Members of the public have been warned to avoid the area after a light aircraft went down in a field near Glasgow Prestwick Airport earlier this afternoon.

An air ambulance was called to the scene

Police, fire and an air ambulance have all scrambled to the scene near the Ayrshire village of Monkton.

Specialist heavy rescue equipment have also been sent to the area.

It’s understood the two people on board have been taken to hospital.

Details of their condition, however, remains unknown.

Flight radar images show the aircraft circling the area before going down near a field close to the A77 Prestwick Bypass.

The roads around the scene of the crash have been locked down as emergency crews deal with the ongoing incident.

The A719 is currently closed at the B739, Monkton.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 4.10pm on Tuesday, 23 April, 24 we received a report that a small aircraft with two people onboard had crashed in Monkton.

“Police and Ambulance are in attendance.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 4.05pm on April 23 to reports of a crash involving a small aircraft near Monkton, Prestwick.

“Control mobilised two appliances and heavy rescue equipment to the scene where crews remain in attendance.”

Prestwick Airport has been approached for comment.
