OAKLAND — A 51-year-old bicyclist found dead June 21 on an East Oakland street was actually struck by two vehicles that fled the scene, authorities said.
The coroner’s office on Tuesday identified the bicyclist as James Brown. The coroner’s office did not have an address for Brown.
Brown was found just after 12 a.m. June 21 in the roadway in the 500 block of 105th Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police initially said he had been struck by one vehicle that fled the scene, but further investigation, including an extensive review of video surveillance in the area, determined that Brown was first struck about 11:56 p.m. June 20 by a silver or white early 2000s BMW that was speeding northbound on 105th Avenue. That vehicle kept going.

As Brown was laying in the roadway, he was hit a second time just after 12 a.m. June 21 by a silver Saturn sedan that was going southbound on 105th Avenue. The male driver briefly stopped and removed part of Brown’s damaged bicycle from underneath the vehicle before driving off again, police said.
Police said the second vehicle was recovered in the area but no arrests have been announced and no one has been charged in the death.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrests of the drivers that struck Brown. Anyone with information may call police traffic investigators at 510-777-8570 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
