Police ID man killed a block from early morning Oakland burglary

OAKLAND — Police here have identified a man who was shot and killed about 90 minutes before sunrise on Aug. 12.

Jermil Lewis, 41, was shot around 4:45 a.m. Aug. 12, on the 700 block of 21st Street in West Oakland. Authorities say the shooting took place a short distance from an attempted break-in that was apparently happening around the same time, and that police are investigating if the two incidents are related.

Lewis got a ride to a hospital but died later that morning, authorities said.

Near the shooting scene, police found a ladder and burglary tools indicative of someone trying to break into a building on 22nd Street, via a back entrance accessible on 21st street, authorities said. The building was declared part of the homicide scene.

A motive for the shooting is under investigation and no arrests have been announced.

Anyone with information about the killing may call police at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950. Anyone with video or pictures that might assist in the investigation may email them to cidvideo@oaklandca.gov.
