This is the moment a police officer shot his partner while they were both on duty pursuing a suspect.

Carlos Baker was chasing Adrian Rucker into an apartment block on the south side of Chicago when he shot his on-off girlfriend Krystal Rivera.

Footage of the incident showed Baker kicking the door down into the building before firing a shot, hitting Ms Rivera in the back.

Baker shouted into his radio that someone had shot ‘at police’ before realising his partner was on the floor and called an ambulance.

A body camera shows Baker dragging Ms Rivera down a flight of stairs.

Ms Rivera was declared dead at a nearby hospital as a result of homicide, Fox News reported.

Three guns were recovered from the scene and Rucker was later caught and taken into custody.

Her family have since launched a lawsuit, arguing that Baker’s previous conduct meant he should never have been a serving police officer.

Baker had been the subject of a dozen complaints of misconduct and had been suspended three times from the force.

Several other incidents were linked to him including a seven-car crash resulting from a high-speed police chase he failed to notify the force about until after the collision.

Baker was also disciplined for alleging abusing his police powers to gain access to footage of an off-duty altercation.

On another occasion, he allegedly hit an off-duty 29-year-old female colleague at a bar before trying to interfere in the subsequent investigation into the complaint.

He was dismissed from Chicago police department last August.

They added that he killed Ms Rivera after she called off their nearly two-year relationship.

Representing Ms Rivera’s relatives, Antonio Romanucci, said Baker had ignored several protocols taught in training including failing to perform CPR and allegedly running to another floor of the building after the shooting.

Mr Romanucci said the force had hired a ‘rogue’ police officer while knowing he represented a risk to the community.

He said: ‘They took affirmative action to hire Carlos Baker when the only action should have been to terminate his probation and ensure he never wore a CPD shield or carried a gun.’

Former Chicago Police superintendent Eddie Johnson said the incident was ‘difficult to watch’ as things ‘went terribly wrong in the blink of an eye’.
