Rams vs. Chargers: Who has the edge?

CHARGERS (0-6) at RAMS (3-4)

When: 1:05 p.m. Sunday

Where: SoFi Stadium

TV/radio: FOX (Ch. 11)/710 AM; 93.1 FM; 1330 AM (Spanish); Sirius 200, 269

Line: Rams by 6.5 points

Notable injury designations

Chargers: OUT: OG Kayode Awosika (fibula), S Derwin James (hamstring), DB Deane Leonard (concussion), WR Brenen Thompson (quad/hamstring); QUESTIONABLE: CB Donte Jackson (hamstring), CB Rodney Shelley (hamstring).

Rams: DOUBTFUL: LS Joe Cardona (ankle); QUESTIONABLE: CB Trent McDuffie (groin), C Coleman Shelton (hip), TE Colby Parkinson (ribs), WR Jordan Whittington (back).

What’s at stake? For the Rams, a chance to climb back up to .500 before they hope to get more players back from injury next week. For the Chargers, their first win of the season.

Who’s better? For all their struggles this year, the Rams have clearly demonstrated some basic competencies and fits within their coaches’ schemes and strategies. The Chargers have yet to demonstrate any such compatibilities with their coaching staff.

Matchup to watch: Rams OLB Byron Young vs. Chargers RT Joe Alt. A Pro Bowl edge rusher versus a former first-round offensive tackle is juicy enough. But given how besieged Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has been this year, if Young can get the best of this matchup then the Rams defense should be able to back the Chargers up and get the offense the ball back.

Rams win if: They sack Herbert at least three times. … They rush for at least 150 yards so they can activate every part of their offense. … They hold the Chargers below 25 yards per kickoff return.

Fantasy sleeper: Rams WR Konata Mumpfield. If Parkinson can’t play, the Rams will be forced to rely more on 11-personnel packages, which could mean an increased role in the passing game for Mumpfield with star receiver Davante Adams already sidelined.

Prediction: Rams 31, Chargers 14. Beat reporter’s record: 3-2 overall; 2-3 against the spread.
