Robbery suspect wounded after he hit LAPD officer with metal bar downtown

A robbery suspect was shot and wounded by Los Angeles Police Department officers today after he struck one of them with a metal bar despite orders to drop it.

The shooting occurred around 1:25 p.m. Saturday at Fourth and Omar streets, according to the LAPD.

While responding to a robbery call, officers encountered a man holding the bar in one hand and a long tree branch in the other, and told him multiple times to “drop the weapon,” according to an LAPD statement.

When the man failed to comply, officers “deployed less-lethal foam rounds to no effect. The suspect charged and struck an officer with the metal bar, and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” the statement read.

The man was struck by the gunfire and taken into custody, according to the statement. He and the officer were taken to hospitals for treatment and both had stable vital signs, and no other injuries occurred.

The metal bar was booked as evidence, police said.

An investigation was underway at the scene, which was expected to be shut down for several hours, according to the LAPD.
