Robert Lewandowski’s MLS coming out party will have to come on another day.
The Fire announced that Thursday’s match against the Vancouver Whitecaps at Soldier Field was postponed because of the poor air quality alert in Chicago. Polish superstar Lewandowski was expected to make his MLS debut in the match.
The match will be played on Tuesday, Oct. 6. A post-match concert by the DJ duo Two Friends will also be rescheduled.
Smoke from a Canadian wildfire made it dangerous for anyone to be outside for long periods of time, government officials warned.
“We share our fans’ disappointment, especially given the excitement surrounding our first match back following the FIFA World Cup break and the anticipation of welcoming more than 40,000 fans to Soldier Field,” Dave Baldwin, the Fire’s president of business operations, said in a statement. “With a marquee matchup against Vancouver, the anticipated home debut of Robert Lewandowski, and the Two Friends post-match concert, tonight was expected to be a special evening at Soldier Field. While we know this decision is disappointing, health and safety must come first.”
The city closed its beaches and all 50 outdoor swimming pools because of poor air quality. The Chicago Park District canceled all outdoor activities that couldn’t be moved inside.
The captain of the Polish national team, Lewandowski, 37, last played for Spanish powerhouse Barcelona. After starting his professional career in Poland, Lewandowski also suited up for German titans Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, winning the 2020 Champions League with Bayern.
Lewandowski is the latest big-name signing for MLS, joining Lionel Messi in Miami, Thomas Muller in Vancouver and Son Heung-Min with LAFC.
