A San Francisco man was convicted of assaulting a police officer in United Nations Plaza, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced Friday.

A jury found Jonathan Bissell, 31, guilty of battery on an officer, threatening an executive officer and resisting or delaying an officer, prosecutors said.

The attack happened around 1 a.m. on Aug. 31, 2023, when Bissell confronted an officer on duty at UN Plaza, threatened him, then punched him in the face and tackled him to the ground, according to trial evidence.

Prosecutors said Bissell also tried to grab the officer’s firearm during the struggle, which lasted several minutes until backup arrived.

The officer was treated at San Francisco General Hospital for a head injury, prosecutors said.
