Severe weather systems move across Chicago area

Storms moved through the Chicago area Saturday evening, bringing strong winds and spots of heavy rainfall and prompting brief severe thunderstorm warnings.

Aurora, Joliet and Chicago Heights saw up to 60 mph wind gusts and small hail, the National Weather Service said.

The storms delayed the Savannah Bananas exhibition game at Rate Field by an hour and 45 minutes past the 7 p.m. start time.

The severe weather also triggered a special marine warning Saturday night for watercraft on southern Lake Michigan. “Small craft could be damaged in briefly higher winds and suddenly higher waves,” the weather service said.

The storm systems were expected to move out of the area Saturday night, with some rain still possible overnight. A hazardous weather outlook remained in effect for Cook County and the majority of northern Illinois overnight into Sunday, the weather service said.

On Sunday, the final day of the Chicago Air and Water Show, there’s a 20% chance of rain, with a high of 82.
