OAKLAND — A 34-year-old man sitting in a parked van in East Oakland Tuesday night was wounded by a stray bullet fired during a confrontation between other people, authorities said.
The man was in critical but stable condition at a hospital where he was being treated for a wound to his head, authorities said.
The shooting happened about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 6400 block of Foothill Boulevard where the man was sitting in a parked van, authorities said.
According to initial reports, police believe a gunfight erupted between other people in the area. Whether they were in vehicles or on the street has not yet been determined, but the shooting activated a gunshot detection alert system, police said.
The man in the van was the only person found wounded and police do not believe he was an intended target. No other shooting victims showed up at local hospitals.
Numerous shell casings were found in the area, authorities said.
What prompted the confrontation that led to the shooting is under investigation. No arrests have been made and no suspect information has been released yet by police.
Anyone with information about the shooting may call investigators at 510-238-3426. Anyone with pictures or video of the shooting may e-mail them to cidvideo@oaklandca.gov.
