Surprise, cousin! FX’s ‘The Bear’ drops new episode chronicling a road trip to Gary

Fans of Chicago-based FX smash hit “The Bear” got a surprise Tuesday.

A previously unannounced episode dropped on Hulu and Disney+ ahead of the series’ fifth and final season, expected to air this summer.

The episode follows Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and Mikey (Jon Bernthal) on a road trip from Chicago to Gary, Indiana. The work trip takes place before Mikey’s suicide, which rocks the Berzatto family and brings his brother Carmy back from his fine dining career in New York to help salvage the family sandwich shop.

“COUSINS! PRIMOS! CUGINI!!! Get ready for GARY!!!!” Moss-Bachrach captioned a post on Instagram announcing the surprise drop.

The flashback episode, written by Moss-Bachrach and Bernthal, offers a glimpse into the intimate friendship between the two.

“Making this was a dream come true,” Moss-Bachrach wrote. “Thank you to the beautiful people of Gary, Indiana and as always Chicago, Illinois.”

Previous seasons of “The Bear” have primarily followed Mikey’s friends and loved ones starting a new restaurant in the wake of his death, but fans have only seen him in a few flashback episodes. A Season 2 episode titled “Fishes” delved into an intense family Christmas that goes haywire. It earned the series critical and fan acclaim.

“Gary” is sure to give viewers even more context into the relationship between Richie and Mikey and add to the layers of grief following Mikey’s suicide.

The fifth season is set to air this summer and pick up following the Season 4 finale when Carmy decides to leave the restaurant.
