Suspect arrested in stabbing of Gilroy grocery store worker

GILROY – One man is behind bars and another is in stable condition following a stabbing at a grocery store in Gilroy, police said.

The incident happened Tuesday at the Safeway in the 900 block of First Street, the Gilroy Police Department said in a news release.

An investigation revealed the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Derek Bell, walked into an employee-only area and was asked to leave. Police said Bell instead threw an object at an employee.

A second employee, identified as a 51-year-old man, approached Bell and told him to leave. That’s when Bell pulled out a knife and stabbed the employee, police said.

The employee was rushed to an area hospital, where he is listed in stable condition, police said.

Bell left the supermarket after the stabbing, but officers quickly found him, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and booked into Santa Clara County jail.

Bell is being held without bail at the Main Jail in San Jose, according to jail records. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
