The driver of a stolen pickup truck was found shot dead hours after allegedly shooting a state trooper multiple times following an attempted traffic stop that led to a pursuit which ended at a Michigan City, Indiana, gas station Friday morning.
The driver was found with gunshot wounds sometime after 10:30 a.m. near Joliet and Wozniak roads in the village of Westville, Ind., about 5 miles away from where the trooper was shot. Earlier, troopers found the pickup at a different location but also in Westville, state police said at a news conference. It wasn’t immediately clear how the suspect, a man, was shot.
The incident unfolded about 5:30 a.m. when the Berrien County, Michigan, sheriff’s department began pursuing the pickup, a silver Ford F-150, which they believed to be stolen, state police said.
The chase led into northwest Indiana where the driver escaped Berrien authorities and a state trooper spotted it on Interstate-94, officials said. They tried to pull the pickup over but it sped away and troopers gave chase, state police said.
The chase ended at a Speedway in Michigan City, where the driver of the pickup shot a trooper multiple times, state police said.
The trooper was taken to Franciscan Health and transferred to Memorial Hospital hospital in South Bend, where he was in surgery, officials said. His condition was later stabilized and he was said to be “in good spirits.”
This is a developing story, check back for details.
