A teenager was sentenced to prison last week after admitting to a part in the 2023 carjacking and fatal shooting of an Iraqi refugee in Arapahoe County, according to court records.
Raydon Collins, 19, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of second-degree murder, two counts of aggravated robbery and two violent-crime sentence enhancers after the shooting death of Ahmed Zainuldeen.
Collins took a deal in February that included guilty pleas to one of the robbery charges and one sentence enhancer, while the more serious charges were dismissed. He was sentenced May 30 to five years in Colorado’s Youthful Offender System and 13 years in prison, with credit for 476 days served.
Collins was part of a group that stole Zainuldeen’s car and shot the 23-year-old in the parking lot of an apartment complex near East Harvard Avenue and South Quebec Street on the night of Sept. 19, 2023, when Zainuldeen confronted them.
Another defendant — Dhaevontae Rogers-Broadus, 18 — was sentenced to 30 years of imprisonment in April for his role in the carjacking and a separate shooting.
