Teen sentenced to 30 years in prison for fatal Aurora, Arapahoe County shootings

An 18-year-old man was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in two shootings that killed an Iraqi refugee and an Aurora teenager in 2023.

Dhaevontae Rogers-Broadus pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the deaths of Ahmed Zainuldeen and Raphael Velin, who were killed in separate shootings on Sept. 19 and Sept. 30, 2023, the Arapahoe County District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.

Zainuldeen, 23, was fatally shot in an apartment complex parking lot in the 7400 block of East Harvard Avenue after he confronted Rogers-Broadus and two other teens who were trying to steal his car.

Rogers-Broadus’ gun was used in the shooting but prosecutors do not believe he was the shooter, according to the DA’s office. The group of teens left with Zainuldeen’s car, which he had recently saved up to buy. His family had moved to metro Denver nine months previously after fleeing persecution in Iraq.

Eleven days after Zainuldeen’s death, police say Rogers-Broadus was involved in a shooting in the parking lot of Aurora’s Southlands Mall that killed Velin.

Velin was shot multiple times during an aggravated robbery, according to the district attorney’s office, and Rogers-Broadus and four others were arrested in the case. Police were never able to determine who fired the shots that killed Velin.

Rogers-Broadus was 16 years old at the time of the shootings but was charged as an adult.

“Ultimately, two families are torn apart by these senseless acts of violence. I recognized that no sentence will repair the harm this defendant has caused,” Senior Deputy District Attorney Cole Plummer said in a statement.

Attorneys for Rogers-Broadus could not immediately be reached for comment on Wednesday.
