Some parts of the Chicago area could feel hotter than 100 degrees this week as a heat wave hits the area, forecasters say.
Chicago itself will likely be spared the hottest heat index — or how the temperature feels — of nearly 105 degrees, which is expected to hit the south suburbs on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Instead, Chicago could see temperatures climb into the 80s on Tuesday and into the lower 90s on Wednesday, according to Zachary Yack, meteorologist at the National Weather Service Romeoville office.
High humidity will push the heat index in Chicago into the low 90s on Tuesday and the upper 90s on Wednesday, he said.
The high temperatures — the result of a heat dome moving into the area — will keep temperatures about 10 degrees above the normal average for late August and early September, Yack said.
Chicago has been spared perilously high temperatures for the last couple weeks. But an earlier heat wave in July has pushed the Cook County heat-related death toll to 13 — the highest count in at least the last decade.
Potential storms are forecast for overnight Wednesday and Thursday, forecasters said.
Cooler temperatures move into the area on Thursday and Friday, when more “seasonable” temperatures of highs in the low 80s are expected to continue into next week, Yack said.
“We will stay seasonable here for the foreseeable future,” Yack said.
