Willy Adames became the first player in a Giants uniform to slug 30 home runs since Barry Bonds, and Rafael Devers anchored the lineup with a combined 35 homers between San Francisco and Boston, but neither player was the club’s lone finalist for a Silver Slugger award.
The honor belonged to Matt Chapman, who was passed over when Gold Glove finalists were announced earlier this month but is being recognized for his bat. The third baseman was one of four finalists at his position in the National League, the Louisville Slugger company announced Wednesday.
Chapman, 32, is a finalist for a second consecutive season after batting .231 with 21 homers and a .770 OPS (120 OPS+). He is a five-time Gold Glove winner and a two-time Platinum Glove honoree but has never earned the top offensive award for his position.
The last Giants player to win a Silver Slugger was Buster Posey in 2021. Matt Williams, who coached Chapman the past two seasons, took home the honor three times with the Giants, in 1990, 1993 and 1994, the organization’s only third baseman to win the award.
The award is voted on by managers and coaches of each team in the NL, which get four ballots apiece.
The other NL finalists at third base were Manny Machado (SD), Max Muncy (LAD) and Austin Riley (ATL).
The winner will be announced November 6.
— Oakland native Nico Hoerner, the Cubs second baseman who starred at Head-Royce School and Stanford, was named a finalist along with the Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte and the Brewers’ Brice Turang.
The Marlins’ Kyle Stowers, Hoerner’s teammate at Stanford who broke out this season with 25 home runs and was an All-Star, is a finalist among N.L. outfielders along with the Mets’ Juan Soto, the Cubs’ Kyle Tucker, the Diamondbacks’ Corbin Carroll, the Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstrong and the Nationals’ James Wood.
