Travis Pastrana Rips A Subaru BRAT Through The Australian Outback In Final ‘Gymkhana’ Video

Travis Pastrana’s tenure as star of late rally icon Ken Block‘s viral Hoonigan Gymkhana series is coming to a close, and the freakishly talented action-sports athlete/daredevil’s sendoff features him doing the “impossible” across Australia. Or, at least, what’s only possible for Pastrana.

His chariot of choice is an absolutely cracked Subaru BRAT—an acronym for “Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter applied to the cult-favorite tiny pickup produced by the Japanese marque from 1978 to 1994. Developed by Subaru of America and the rally car experts at Vermont SportsCar to comply with World Rally Cross’s stringent safety standards, the “Brataroo 9500” features a turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four producing 670 horsepower and 680 pound-feet of torque and revving to screaming 9,500 revs. As Road & Tracknotes, it even features active front fenders and adjustable rear wings.

“This BRAT’s completely unhinged—in the best way possible,” said Pastrana when the car was revealed at SEMA earlier this year. “It’s got the soul of a vintage Subaru with the tech to do things no Gymkhana car has ever done. Every part of it is designed to take abuse, fly big, and come back for more. It’s hands down the craziest Gymkhana car we’ve ever built.”
Following the opener—an absolutely heroic jump over moving semi-truck traveling through a ravine—comes the highest-octane tour of the Outback. Pastrana pulls up to a V8 Supercar mid-lap at New South Wales’ Mount Panorama Circuit, flashes a mid-air thumbs up to his cabin camera, and cleverly uses the end of a harbor to perform what has to be one of few examples of a car grinding a ledge—all are interstitials to a truly dizzying amount of Gymkhana’s signature sideways action.
