People have woken up bleary-eyed and begging for the heatwave to end after another tropical night with thunder rolling over the UK.
Thunderstorms swept across the southern parts of England overnight, with Londoners saying they were woken up by loud bolts and ‘strobe lights’ like they had never seen before.
A new June record temperature of 37.1C was reached in Cavendish, Suffolk, yesterday, while London pavements are sizzling, reaching almost 60C during the heat spell.
And the weather has more in store before some cooler air flows in, marking an end to the record-breaking scorcher from tomorrow.
London, the South East and East Anglia remain under an amber extreme heat warning active until 9pm today, with the conditions compounded by humidity.
The Met Office warns of the risk of heat exhaustion and possible power cuts today, while travel continues to be disrupted today as the rail infrastructure struggles to cope, with major train operators running a reduced schedule.
