HEAVY rain is set to soak Britain after a freezing -1C night – but there’s sunshine to come.

The mercury will drop below zero in Biggar, south Lanarkshire at 6am tomorrow.

It comes after a low of -2C was recorded in parts of the Scottish Highlands in the early hours of this morning.

Heavy rain is forecast from Thursday onwards after a cold and cloudy start to the week.

Today cloud will linger in the south east with some outbreaks of drizzle.

But the north will enjoy some prolonged spells of sunshine, forecasters said.

A northerly breeze will chill the whole country before a dry cold night with clear spells and a patchy frost in the countryside.

Tomorrow will be largely dry with just a few showers in eastern counties.

It will be quite cloudy in the east, but the west will be blessed with good spells of sunshine.

Winds will buffet the coasts before the weather slowly becomes more unsettled.

The Met Office said showers and longer spells of rain will soak the UK from Thursday onwards.

Brisk, chilly winds will blow grey clouds all over the country – a far cry from the glorious weather last weekend.

The Environment Agency has issued 43 amber flood alerts throughout England for the next five days.

But the agency said the general flood risk this week is actually very low.

Cloud will linger in the southeast with some outbreaks of drizzle at times.

Sunny spells developing for many, with prolonged spells of sunshine in the north.

Feeling chilly in a northerly breeze.

Tonight

Rain in the south east will fade away, leaving a dry night with clear spells.

Cold for most places tonight with a patchy frost in rural spots.

Wednesday

Largely dry with just a few showers in eastern counties.

Partly cloudy in the east with some bright spells, but good spells of sunshine across western areas.

Windy around coasts.

Thursday to Saturday

Gradually becoming more unsettled towards the weekend with showers or longer spells of rain at times.

Often cloudy and feeling chilly in brisk winds.
