Universal Studios Hollywood uses double-sided lockers for first time on Fast & Furious coaster

Fast & Furious riders will only have to follow one rule of the road while breaking the speed limit and driving recklessly on the new street racing coaster coming to Universal Studios Hollywood — the hands-free law that makes it illegal to hold a mobile phone while driving.

Riders on the new Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift roller coaster will be required to store their smartphones, keys and all other loose items in free lockers located in the middle of the attraction queue.

The new Fast & Furious coaster opening this summer will be the first ride at Universal Studios Hollywood to require riders to pass through metal detectors and use double-sided lockers.

“Safety is paramount,” Universal Creative Vice President Jon Corfino said during a behind-the-scenes tour of the new ride. “There’s nothing more important than that.”

Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift will hit a top speed of 72 mph — the fastest coaster at any Universal theme park — while navigating four inversions along a 4,100-foot-long track.

The double-sided, pass-through lockers in the Fast & Furious queue will be similar to the systems used on the Jurassic World VelociCoaster at Universal’s Islands of Adventure and Stardust Racers, Monsters Unchained and Hiccup’s Wing Gliders at Universal’s Epic Universe.

The color-coded banks of lockers in the Fast & Furious queue will use the barcode on your admission ticket or annual pass to lock and unlock the two-sided compartments. Riders with digital tickets or passes on their smartphones will need to ask a ride attendant for a paper barcode to use.

Riders will deposit their loose items in the lockers before passing through the metal detectors and retrieve their belongings when they exit after riding the coaster. The double-sided lockers are designed to save time and minimize congestion.
