LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CALIF. — A preliminary 3.1 magnitude quake rattled near Compton, about 6.6 miles north of Long Beach, on Thursday around midday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The tremor shook the area at 1:32 p.m. It occurred at a depth of 8 miles with the epicenter about 2 miles south-southeast of Compton.

The USGS DYFI report shows that residents in a few cities, including South Gate and Bellflower, felt the quake.

Over the last week, there have been six earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater centered nearby. The strongest, a 3.3 magnitude quake, was reported close to Avalon on Sep. 12.
