Jubilant New York Knicks fans were celebrating across the city last night after the team’s victory, but gunshots and fires broke out as the celebration turned into chaos.

Around the same time, thousands of fans took to the streets across the city, and the Morocco-Brazil match at New York-New Jersey Stadium was wrapping up as well.

Football fans in town for the World Cup saw burning vehicles and heard gunshots around 42nd Street and Broadway.

The victory marks the Knicks’ first championship win since 1973, and New York celebrated properly – and not so properly.

Fans began clashing with police, smashed windshields and climbed atop lightpoles and other structures to celebrate.

The New York Police Department said they arrested several people but haven’t yet released numbers.

Celebrities were out in force at the Knicks game last night, with Ben Stiller, Timothee Chalamet, Taylor Swift, ASAP Rocky and others in the stands.

Meanwhile, singer Jennifer Lopez joined the celebrations from the comfort of the living room, sharing a clip of herself jumping up and down and cheering at the TV screen.

She said: ‘I remember the last time the Knicks were making a run for the championship and rushing home every game day from the set to watch Ewing, Starks and Oakley make a hell of a run.

‘We have all been waiting patiently for this day for years. Thank you for uniting our city again…for uniting the world.’

The Knicks are on a victory run at the same time as the World Cup. Matches are being held in MetLife Stadium – renamed as ‘New York-New Jersey Stadium’ for the competition.

Thousands have also shown up in Boston, Atlanta, Florida and California to support teams from around the globe.

Some drama is unfolding there, too. England players have had football boots and other key equipment stolen just days ahead of their World Cup opener against Croatia.

The Three Lions have been based in Florida since touching down in the US at the start of June but made the journey to Kansas City on Friday where their camp will be based for the duration of the competition.

Thomas Tuchel’s side were scheduled to hold their first training session at their new base on Saturday afternoon with their equipment scheduled to arrive beforehand.

There are fears boots belonging to stars including Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane were among the items nicked from vehicles transferring the equipment to their Swope Soccer Village base.

Police officers were on site on Friday night with two arrests believed to have been made.
