What’s closed for Veterans Day, and is it Monday or Tuesday?

Veterans Day is celebrated on the same date every year — Nov. 11, in honor of the World War I armistice that took effect at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918.

This year, the date falls on a Tuesday, and that’s when the official federal and California closures will take place. (In years when Nov. 11 is a Saturday, the closures are on Friday; when it’s a Sunday, the closures are on Monday.)

Closures on Nov. 11:

• Federal offices and courts

• California state offices and courts. It is a paid day off for state employees.

• California public schools

• Banks

• U.S. Postal Service. No delivery except Priority Mall Express. Post office counter service will be closed, but self-service kiosks in lobbies will be operating.

Remaining open:

• New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq

• Most stores and businesses

• BART and CalTrain will operate on a normal weekday schedule

Holiday events:

San Jose‘s Veterans Day parade will be on Tuesday, starting at noon downtown.

• San Francisco’s Veterans Day parade will be on Sunday, Nov. 9, starting at 10 a.m. at the east end of North Point Street.

• A ceremony on the USS Hornet in Alameda will be on Tuesday, at 11 a.m.

• A ceremony at Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center will be on Tuesday, at 11 a.m.
