White Sox announce John Schriffen won’t return as TV voice

For John Schriffen, it’s three seasons and you’re out.

The White Sox announced Monday that Schriffen won’t return to their TV booth next season. The team said it told Schriffen, 42, that it won’t extend his contract. His three-year deal expired after the season, and the Sox won’t pick up the option year.

The move comes as no surprise after Schriffen’s rocky run as the play-by-play voice. His defense of the Sox during their record 121-loss season in 2024 was outlandish, and his lack of baseball-broadcasting experience and knowledge of the franchise were apparent. Yet, his excitement endeared him to a segment of Sox fans, particularly during the team’s playoff run this season.

“John has been a true professional throughout his three seasons with the White Sox, bringing energy, enthusiasm and a distinctive style to our broadcasts,” Brooks Boyer, the Sox’ chief revenue and marketing officer, said in a statement.

“As his contract comes to an end, we believe this is the appropriate time to evaluate the direction of our broadcasts and determine what is best for the organization and our fans moving forward. We are appreciative of John’s contributions and the connection he built with our fan base. We wish him continued success in his future endeavors.”

“I’m grateful to the Chicago White Sox organization for the opportunity to call games over the past three seasons,” Schriffen said. “Being part of this team’s turnaround and playoff run was truly special. I want to thank White Sox fans for welcoming me to Chicago and for their support throughout my time here. I’ll always cherish the memories and look forward to what’s next.”

Perhaps Schriffen saw the writing on the wall when he chose to call a UFC event rather than be available for the Sox’ playoff clincher in September. Schriffen contractually was allowed a certain number of games off, but his decision to miss the Sox’ first clinching game in five years couldn’t have sat well with team brass.
