HOUSTON – Tommy Pham’s second stint with the White Sox has officially begun, which requires official moves in response.
While Pham and hard-throwing right-hander Tanner McDougal were added to the active roster on Tuesday as part of MLB rosters expanding to 28 players on Sept. 1, the White Sox also had a full 40-man roster. One day after being optioned to Triple-A, left-hander Tyler Gilbert was designated for assignment to make room for Pham’s addition.
After posting a 3.88 ERA in 51 innings for the Sox last season, occasionally working as an opener, the 32-year-old Gilbert has thrown just six major league innings this year and allowed eight earned runs. Gilbert missed over a month of action with shoulder impingement, and has spent the bulk of the year in Triple-A while lefties Chris Murphy and Tyler Schweitzer have gotten more big league run.
As essentially the second right-handed platoon bat on the roster behind Randal Grichuk, the 38-year-old Pham is filling a niche role for the final month of the White Sox’ playoff hunt. But the Sox anticipate his presence offering more than that of the typical part-time player.
“The human being, the teammate, the edge that he brings, kind of who he is as a total player, I think he’s going to make a real big impact here,” said Sox manager Will Venable. “He’s honest, convicted in what he believes in. He’s just a good player that’s really smart and super professional.”
McDougal made his major league debut on Aug. 13, and it quickly went sideways. In his first outing in almost two weeks, he walked three batters and hit another to push a run across in a 9-8 loss to the Reds, and was optioned to Triple-A after the game. The results weren’t much better upon McDougal’s return to Charlotte, as he walked six and allowed three homers in 4 2/3 innings over five appearances.
In general, McDougal’s midseason conversion to relief after missing two months for a flexor strain has been wonky. But the Sox believe the talent and stuff that made McDougal a preseason top-100 prospect per Baseball America, and saw him run a 3.00 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 24 innings in the first month of the Triple-A season, will shine through eventually.
