Who is Princess Margret’s daughter Lady Sarah Chatto?

Lady Sarah Chatto is one of the lesser known members of the Royal Family.

She is the only daughter of Princess Margaret, and Antony Armstrong-Jones, who was known as Lord Snowdon.

This makes her the only niece of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Lady Sarah also has a brother called David Armstrong Jones, who is the 2nd Earl of Snowdon following the death of their father.

She is also the youngest grandchild of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother

Despite being 28th in line to the throne, Lady Sarah prefers to maintain a life out of the royal spotlight with her husband Daniel Chatto.

She left school with an A level in Art and studied at the Camberwell School of Art as well as the Royal Academy Schools.

Lady Sarah then took a two year sabbatical with her father in India where she photographed the production of A Passage To India.

The talented royal has had many exhibitions of her art and is vice president of The Royal Ballet.

Lady Sarah is one of Prince Harry‘s six godparents, and was chosen by his father King Charles and his late wife Princess Diana.

Born on April 22, 1957, Daniel Chatto is an artist and former actor.

Lady Sarah met her future husband in the early 80s whilst she was working with her father Lord Snowdown in India.

Daniel was filming the historical romance movie, Heat and Dust.

The former actor turned artist comes from a showbiz family, as his dad Tom was an actor and his mother a well known theatre agent.

When was Lady Sarah Chatto’s wedding to Daniel Chatto?

The couple married on July 14, 1994 at St Stephen’s Walbrook in London, a beautiful church designed by the renowned architect Sir Christopher. 

The ceremony welcomed 200 guests made up of the Royal Family and other dignitaries and members of society.

Lady Sarah had three bridesmaids which included Zara Phillips, Lady Frances Armstrong-Jones, and family friend Tara Noble Singh.

The bride wore a Jasper Conran gown and the Snowdon Floral Tiara, which her father Lord Snowdon had given Princess Margaret on their own wedding day.

Does Lady Sarah Chatto have any children?

The couple have two children, both sons.

Samuel David Benedict – who was born on July 28, 1996 – is 29th in the line of succession to the British throne.

While his brother, Arthur Robert Nathaniel, who Sarah and Daniel welcomed on February 5, 1999, is 30th in line.

Both sons attended Eton College.

In 2021, The Sun revealed that Arthur had joined the Royal Marines which is a role he continues to hold.

Much like her fellow Royal Family members, Lady Chatto lives in the lap of luxury.

Along with her husband and two kids, she resides in Kensington in a grade II-listed terrace house.

Lady Sarah has always known extravagance, when it comes to where she lives.

Like many of her cousins, she grew up in Kensington Palace.

Lady Sarah got on well with both her parents.

She shared a special bond with her father Lord Snowdown over their love of art and photography.

Lady Sarah would even join him on photoshoots, where she would work as his assistant.

In fact it was on a shoot in India with Lord Snowdon, that she met her future husband Daniel Chatto.

Despite living largely out of the public eye, Lady Sarah is still very much part of big Royal Family events.

As a young royal, she stepped into the spotlight in 1973 when she was just nine-years-old.

This was when she was bridesmaid for her cousin Princess Anne at her wedding to Captain Mark Phillips.

Lady Sarah was then asked to do this again in 1981 at the wedding of a then-Prince Charles to Princess Diana.

The royal had a good relationship with her late aunt, the Queen.

As the late monarch’s only niece, it is reported that Queen Elizabeth had a lot of time for Lady Sarah.

Speaking shortly after Elizabeth II’s passing, a source told Hello!: “Sarah and Her Majesty the Queen had a very close and unique relationship.

“She will no doubt be grieving and processing this in private and we can expect to see her with the rest of the royal family in the coming days.”

The Queen was said to “adore” Sarah, and only allowed her niece to accompany her to her favourite hideaway, Craigowan Lodge, in Aberdeenshire.

The pair were particularly close since the death of Princess Margaret.

In fact, Sarah was so close to her auntie she was one of only 30 people who were allowed to attend Prince Philip’s funeral.

Lady Chatto’s life as an artist

Away from the royal spotlight and Sarah is a talented artist.

Lady Chatto’s late father Lord Snowdon supported her creativity and helped her become the artists she is today.

The royal’s dad was a talented photographer and wanted to forge her career in the arts as well.

Lady Sarah’s love of landscape painting started during long holidays at royal estates like Balmoral and Sandringham.

She later honed undertook a foundation at the Camberwell School of Art, before studying art at the Royal Academy Schools.

Lady Sarah continues to work as an artist and exhibits her work at the Redfern Gallery in London.

She has been honoured with awards including the Winsor & Newton Prize in 1988 and the Creswick Landscape Prize in 1990.
