The 29-year-old doused Hashi Odowa, 82, and Mohammed Rayaz, 70, with petrol before setting them on fire.

Horror footage captured Mohammed engulfed by flames as he desperately shouted out in pain.

As the fireball covered his body, paranoid schizophrenic Abbkr then threw more petrol onto the flames – causing more flames to erupt.

The attack came just just one month after Abbkr also lit Hashi on fire as he left the West London Islamic Centre in Ealing.

He has now been handed an indefinite hospital order after being found guilty of two counts of attempted murder.

Abbkr came to the UK from Sudan in 2017 seeking asylum and was granted leave to remain two years later.

The horror unfolded on February 27 last year when Hashi was attacked as he made his way to a neighbour’s car.

He managed to escape serious injury by removing his burning jacket and vest while the neighbour smothered the flames.

Then on March 20, Abbkr hurled petrol over Mohammed as he left the Dudley Road Mosque.

The grandad’s family shared an image of him in hospital that was taken just 24 hours after the horror attack.

He can be seen lying on a pillow with his severe burns unable to even open his eyes.

His son, Mohammed Ayaz, told Birmingham Live how his dad asked “Why did he attack me? I didn’t know or do anything to him” when he was finally able to speak again.

Mohammed had to spend four weeks in hospital to get his bandages changed, with medics warning it will take two years for his skin to fully heal.

He has also been left with PTSD and depression following the murder attempt.

Counter-terror cops were involved in the investigation as the attacks took place in the run-up to Ramadan but no motive has ever been identified.

During his trial, Abbkr claimed he believed those he had set on fire were among several people “controlling him through magic”.

But prosecutors successfully argued he knew what he was doing was wrong and had attempted to kill his victims.

Chief Inspector Haroon Chughtai, from West Midlands Police, said: “This was not treated as a terrorist incident. To date there is no evidence of an ideology.

“These were horrific unprovoked attacks on two men in their 70s and 80s who were leaving their local mosques and going home after their prayers.”
