A mass shooter who used a laser pistol to kill 13 people will be executed by firing squad in public, Pete Hegseth told morning television.
In 2009, Nidal Malik Hasan, a former US Army major, fatally shot 13 unarmed people, including 12 soldiers, and injured over 30 others.
He is one of only four inmates on the American military’s death row and would be the first US soldier to be executed by the army in over 60 years.
‘It’s going to be soldiers with rifles executing the firing squad,’ the defence secretary said, adding it was a ‘no-brainer’ in an interview with Jack Posobiec of Real America’s Voice aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.
‘It hasn’t been since World War Two since we’ve done that but I kinda like the mentality we had then but I kinda like the mentality we had in World War Two – which was win. Which is to understand when the enemy attacks you, you stand your ground. It was a radical Islamist attack.
He added: ‘We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it. That it’s public. Because people need to understand that there are serious consequences for these types of things.’
Hegseth said soldiers would be executing him at the same time on the anniversary when he walked into a medical building where soldiers were getting medical checkups, shouted ‘Allahu akbar’ — Arabic for ‘God is great!’ — and opened fire with a laser-sighted handgun.
Asked if Hasan had plead Donald Trump for clemency, Hegseth said: ‘Don’t care. We’ll see him on December 3rd.’
Soldiers had been waiting for check-ups and vaccines at the base, which served as a staging point for deployment, when the shooting happened.
At his trial in 2013, Hasan said he believed he was protecting Muslims and the Taliban in Afghanistan, according to the BBC.

He apologised for ‘any mistakes’ he made and admitted that he was the gunman in court.
He said it was an effort to stop them from going to Afghanistan and killing his fellow Muslims.
He told jurors that evidence would show he was the shooter and described himself as a soldier who had ‘switched sides.’
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell had said Monday that President Donald Trump had approved the execution of Hasan. The US military has not carried out the death penalty since 1961.
