A young boy has died after being hit by a van in Wimborne, Dorset.

The child, a pedestrian, was hit by a Ford Transit van on Cutler Place in Colehill, near the junction with Middlehill Road, this afternoon.

He was given CPR at the scene but was declared dead soon after police were first called at 1.54pm.

His family have been informed.

A witness saw an air ambulance and ‘a lot of emergency services vehicles’, the Dorset Echo reported.

Road closures were put in place while officers combed the scene, causing delays of about 15 minutes on the A31 between A341 (Merley Roundabout) and B3073 (Canford Bottom).

Inspector Joe Wheable said: ‘First and foremost, our thoughts and hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the young child who very sadly died in this collision.

‘We are continuing to carry out a detailed investigation to establish the full circumstances of what happened.

‘I would urge any witnesses who have not already spoke to police, or anyone who may have captured relevant dashcam footage, to please make contact with us.

‘Finally, I would like to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding during the road closures.’

Wimborne is about five miles north of Poole.
