A young woman died after falling from the Cliffs of Moher in southwestern Ireland yesterday.

Emergency services arrived at the scene of the Co Clare cliffside at around 1.20pm following reports a woman in her 20s had fallen.

She was reportedly a college student not from Ireland.

The Irish broadcaster RTÉ reported that she was visiting the 214-metre-high tourist attraction with three friends when she lost her footing.

A rescue helicopter located the woman but emergency officials struggled to access the location.

Lifeboat crews recovered her body after 3pm and the body was then taken to Doolin Coast Guard station where the woman was formally pronounced dead.

The body will be taken to University Hospital Limerick where a postmortem examination will be carried out.

A garda spokesperson said: ‘Gardaí and emergency services conducted an operation following reports of an incident at the Cliffs Moher this afternoon.

‘The body of a woman, aged in her early 20s, was removed from the water by emergency services.’
