When the NFL season really gets rolling, people are going to be watching for breakout rookies in the league. In a piece published on Wednesday, September 3, by of CBS Sports, Trapasso rattles off his picks for the best rookies in the NFL.

“While we can’t draw any concrete conclusions about the entire career ahead of a player, getting those initial good first impressions can go a long way in the evaluation process,” he notes in the piece. He’s referring to the preseason and how these players looked in the setting of the NFL.

Two Detroit Lions rookies made the cut: No. 18, wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa, and No. 83, Jackson Meeks.

“TeSlaa looked as explosive as he did at Arkansas this summer, with 10 catches for 146 yards and three touchdowns for the Lions in the preseason, a few of which were highlight-reel scores,” he notes in the piece. “He did get the extra preseason game but I couldn’t leave him off this list after how comfortable he appeared on the field for Detroit.”

He adds that “Meeks led all rookies with 176 yards receiving in August. In the second preseason game against the Dolphins, six of his seven catches went for first downs. In Atlanta, he caught a 68-yard touchdown.

Jared Goff of the Detroit Lions Gets Props

More positive news for the Lions this week came with quarterback Jared Goff being named the No. 15 best player in the NFL on the league’s annual tally.

“The Lions have flipped 180 degrees from the bottom of the barrel to darlings of the league and Super Bowl contenders in just the last few years, and the arrival of Goff has been a big reason why,” Coral Smith of the NFL notes in an August 25 feature. “In 2024, his ninth year in the league, Goff was one of the best quarterbacks around, ranking top-five in completion percentage, passing yards and touchdowns.”

So, the Lions have great vets like Goff and fantastic rookies, so what’s not to love? Hopefully they can get Detroit a championship for the first time ever.
