49ers Expected to Make Call on Star Defensive End, Insider Says

The San Francisco 49ers recently suffered a major loss on the defensive side of the football, with superstar defensive end Nick Bosa going down with a season-ending knee injury. The costly injury presents a glaring problem for the 49ers in a season when the team may have a chance to compete.

With Bosa on the mend and a need at defensive end, 49ers general manager John Lynch will have his work cut out for him heading toward the NFL trade deadline on Nov. 4. The team’s front office looks pretty open to the idea of making a trade for a pass rusher, which could be a game-changer for the storied franchise with the team having got off to a good start at 4-1.

Fortunately for the 49ers, there seems to be one very intriguing trade target, which would provide a considerable upgrade to the defensive line for the rest of the 2025 NFL season.

49ers Trade Rumors Heating Up Ahead of NFL Trade Deadline

With the 49ers riding high after five games, including four wins, even though the team is dealing with several injuries to key players, San Francisco may get aggressive ahead of the trade deadline in order to bolster the defense in Bosa’s absence.

The one intriguing option for the 49ers is Trey Hendrickson of the Cincinnati Bengals, who went through drawn-out contract talks during the NFL offseason and likely doesn’t have the best taste in his mouth when it comes to how the franchise values him.

According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the 49ers are exploring their trade options around the league, and she expects San Francisco to reach out to Cincinnati about Hendrickson’s availability.

Teams are mostly in the information-gathering phase right now — not just evaluating potential targets, but taking a hard look at themselves, too. Injuries, slumps, and locker room temperature checks will dictate whether a front office buys or sells.

San Francisco is canvassing the pass rusher market to fill the void left by Nick Bosa’s injury. I expect them to call Cincinnati about Trey Hendrickson.

With the Bengals’ season quickly spiraling out of control after Joe Burrow‘s toe injury, which will keep him sidelined for a considerable amount of time, Cincinnati might be open to making a move in the event the team’s brass feels like competing for a playoff spot is unlikely.

The Bengals have already been actively making trade calls, as they recently acquired veteran quarterback Joe Flacco in a deal with the division rival Cleveland Browns.

49ers GM John Lynch Admits to Making Trade Calls

Earlier this week, Lynch let it be known that he’s already had some good and productive trade calls when it comes to addressing the need at defensive end in the wake of Bosa’s season-ending injury.

The question now is whether Hendrickson is the team’s top target, as rumors have also been circulating about the 49ers’ interest in trading for Las Vegas Raiders superstar Maxx Crosby, whose season has gone off track after five games.

It’ll be interesting to see what materializes for the 49ers and if Lynch can pull off a deal that sets the team up for the rest of the season on the defensive side of the football.
