The San Francisco 49ers could make do without Brock Purdy in Week 2 after Mac Jones led the team to a win over the New Orleans Saints. As Week 3 begins with Thursday Night Football, the question heading into the weekend is whether Purdy will be healthy to play.
Purdy injured his toe in the first half of the season opener against Seattle but stayed in the game, ultimately guiding a game-winning drive that ended with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jake Tonges.
After two straight road games, the 49ers will have their first game at Levi’s Stadium against NFC West division rival, the Arizona Cardinals. Ahead of the clash, 49ers general manager John Lynch spoke on KNBR, providing an injury update on Purdy as they weigh whether he should play against Arizona.
“I can tell you that it was encouraging to see him practice,” Lynch said during his radio appearance on September 18. “He was limited yesterday…the key now is how does he respond to that…We will make an organizational decision on where Brock’s at later in the week, but it’s encouraging to see him out there.”
49ers QB Brock Purdy Is Making Progress
Purdy was back on the practice field on September 17, giving him a chance to play this week after missing time with a toe injury.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Purdy will be limited in practice while dealing with the toe and a sore left shoulder, but could still be ready to go Sunday against Arizona.
“Yeah, he does have a chance,” Shanahan said (h/t NFL.com).
Purdy’s injury was compared to turf toe, and he was initially labeled as “week to week.” After sitting out just one game, he now has a shot to return. It’s the second straight season that the 49ers’ signal caller has dealt with an injury.
Purdy sat out two games last season due to injuries, missing one with a right shoulder issue and another with a right elbow problem.
Should the 49ers Be Cautious With Brock Purdy?
San Francisco saw that Jones can win them football games and execute the play calls from Shanahan. Jones completed 26 of 39 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns without an interception in the victory at New Orleans.
It marked his best performance since the 2022 season opener with the New England Patriots. Moreover, Jones has the backing of his teammates that he can get the job done, and on September 17, 49ers pass rusher Nick Bosa shared what impressed him the most from the performance against the Saints.
“I think his poise,” Bosa said (h/t KNBR). “I think he was kind of excited to start out, overthrowing a little bit probably because he’s so pumped up to be out there but he settled in and did enough for us to win.”
The 49ers should be 100 percent sure that Purdy is healthy to be out on the field and to ensure there’s no possibility of aggravating his toe injury. San Francisco should understand it’s early in the season, and they probably know that reaching the playoffs this season requires a healthy Purdy.
