It was a challenging Week 1 performance from San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy in the 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks. The 25-year-old completed 26 of 35 passes for 277 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Despite the two turnovers, Purdy found the endzone when his team needed it the most, as one of his two touchdowns came late in the fourth quarter, allowing San Francisco to take the lead. The 49ers quarterback found Jake Tonges on a four-yard touchdown pass.
Nonetheless, CBS Sports NFL analyst Bryant McFadden wasn’t impressed by Purdy on what turned out to be the game-winning drive to take the win.
“That was the biggest issue from what I watched in that final game-winning drive by Brock Purdy, because on that 3rd-and-3 inside the 10 [yard line], that was a horrible decision by Brock Purdy throwing the football where he threw the football,” McFadden said on the September 7 edition of “CBS Sports HQ.” “He got lucky. His prayers were answered. Seattle, they had a defender there. He just didn’t attack the football.”
Seahawks’ Defense Had Chances to Stop 49ers’ Star
While Purdy was at the heart of McFadden’s analysis on that final drive that led to the 49ers taking the lead for good, he also had words for the Seahawks defense. He believes that Seattle had multiple opportunities to stop the drive in its tracks and take the win.
“And regardless of that decision, defensively you would have to get a stop if you’re not able to completely run the timeout,” McFadden added. “And that was the issue. And that final game-winning drive led by Brock Purdy, Seattle in the secondary, they had moments to make play, opportunities to make plays, just not attacking the football or judging the football properly…
“This is a film, if you’re a Seattle Seahawks fan or clearly the players, when you go back and rewatch this game, you had so many moments where you should have ice this game and walk out the football field with a W in your back pocket. Unfortunately, they allowed the San Francisco 49ers to stick around. And guess what? They’re going back to San Francisco, celebrating on the plane.”
Brock Purdy Happy to Leave Seattle With a Win
Despite what analysts like McFadden and others might think of how Purdy played on that touchdown drive or overall in the win over the Seahawks, the 49ers quarterback his just happy with the victory and the 1-0 start to the season.
“The game wasn’t pretty, but man, it comes down to how you finish,” Purdy said postgame while speaking to FOX Sports. “That’s the NFL. The O-line did a great job, gave me some time. Threw a deep ball to Ricky [Pearsall] on a double move. Then we get to the end, and it’s a scramble drill. You got the backup tight end, Jake Tonges, who was ready when [George] Kittle went down, and he snagged the ball and scored — and we won.”
San Francisco now shifts its attention from the Seahawks to Week 2. The 49ers hit the road again for a second straight week, this time heading to the Caesars Superdome for a matchup with the New Orleans Saints — a game that looks very winnable.
