Alan Shearer has aimed a dig at Alejandro Garnacho for his ‘big dive’ against Burnley and says the Manchester United star was lucky to avoid a yellow card.

The Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday, a poor result against a side only promoted to the Premier League last season.

It was an impressive result for Burnley, managed by Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany, as they look to avoid relegation back to the Championship.

Erik ten Hag’s side, though, felt they should have been awarded penalties for three seperate incidents, two of which involved Garnacho.

Garnacho went down inside the box after making contact with Burnley star Sander Berge, while later in the match, he appeared to dive in a tussle for the ball with Dara O’Shea.

‘The referee got them right,’ Shearer said on Match of the Day about the two decisions.

‘He tries to initiate the contact [with Berge] here, Garnacho. He sticks his right leg out to make the contact. It’s the right decision, never a penalty. This [second one] is a big dive. He’s lucky not to get a yellow card.’

United also felt they should have been given a penalty for handball when Antony’s shot appeared to hit the arm of Burnley full-back Vitinho.

‘He got the decision right again,’ Shearer added. ‘He’s too close to him. His arms are by his side. The referee got all three decisions correct.’

United boss Erik ten Hag was left frustrated after his side’s performance against Burnley and told the BBC: ‘We needed to win.

‘The past few weeks we’ve got in winning positions and then given it away. The gap is too big in this phase of the season.

‘Over many phases of the game we did very good [but] we gave it away again at the end.

‘We have to look in the mirror. We made a mistake, but you take responsibility and they should understand what it means for a team and for a manager.’
