Los Angeles Angels prospect Rio Foster is in critical condition after he was involved in a car crash on Friday morning. Foster, 22, was a passenger in the accident. There has been no update other than that his condition is critical and that he is receiving care at a hospital.
Foster plays for the Angels High-A affiliate the Tri-City Dust Devils in Washington. The Dust Devils canceled their game Friday after news broke about Foster’s accident.
“We’re praying for the best — that’s all we can do,” Angels interim manager Ray Montgomery said before Friday night’s game against the Athletics. “Unfortunately, I’m working on limited [information] … what I do know is it’s obviously way more important than anything we’re doing here today.”
Foster was named the Northwest League player of the month in August.
A Time Where Baseball Seems Irrelevant
When an athlete is hurt off the field, we are all reminded that life is so much bigger than the games and players that we love. In an instant, baseball is no longer the main focus; instead it’s about hope and prayer for an individual who is battling for their life. At just 22-years-old, Foster has not only his baseball career to look forward to, but a long life afterwards. In a moment like this, that’s where our attention should be: hoping that he can simply live a long life without debilitating ailments.
The Tri-City Dust Devils released a statement on X about Foster:
“The thoughts and prayers of the entire Dust Devils organization are with Rio Foster who was a passenger in a car accident early this morning and sustained serious injuries. Tonightâs game against the Hillsboro Hops has been canceled.”
Foster Was Having a Great Season Before the Accident
In 93 games with Tri-City this season, Foster has put up admirable numbers, batting .267 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI. His stellar month of August led to his recognition as Northwest League Player of the Month.
Since being drafted in 2023, Foster has jumped from rookie ball all the way up to High-A where he is now.
