Anthony Davis Makes Major Progress in Return From Injury

The Dallas Mavericks have been without Anthony Davis since October 29, when he suffered a calf strain against the Indiana Pacers. Davis has missed the last 14 games because of the injury, but he recently made major progress in his recovery.

According to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, Davis is scheduled to participate in Wednesday’s practice. He will give it a go in an effort to get cleared before the Mavericks’ next game on Friday against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Davis was initially ruled out for two games after getting diagnosed with a low-grade calf strain. However, the Mavericks took a more cautious approach and let the one-time NBA champion make a full recovery.

Since getting traded to the Mavericks as part of the blockbuster Luka Doncic deal in early February, Davis has only played in 14 regular season games. He has not stayed healthy enough to justify the trade made by Nico Harrison, who was fired on November 11.

In the last 14 games that Davis missed this season, Dallas has only won three games. They have an overall record of 5-14, which is the second-worst record in the Western Conference at the moment.

Davis Trade Status

There have been conflicting reports regarding the Dallas Mavericks’ plans for Anthony Davis once he’s healthy. Grant Liffmann of NBA on NBC first reported that the Mavericks are looking to see how the franchise would do with a healthy roster, which includes Davis and Kyrie Irving.

Former Mavs majority owner Mark Cuban shared the same sentiment in an interview with Joe Vardon of The Athletic last week. However, one NBA executive told Dallas Hoops Journal that Davis is one of several players, along with Klay Thompson, D’Angelo Russell and Daniel Gafford, who are expected to get traded.

ESPN’ Shams Charania seemingly confirmed that the Mavericks are indeed looking to unload Davis before the trade deadline but keep Irving. The dynamic point guard has been out since March after undergoing knee surgery to repair a torn ACL.

Some of the teams currently linked to Davis are his hometown Chicago Bulls and the scorching Detroit Pistons. The Bulls have been previously rumored as a potential destination for the 32-year-old big man, while the Pistons could go all-in for the season with their 15-2 start to the campaign.

Davis to Knicks Possible

Another team worth monitoring if Davis becomes available for trade is the New York Knicks. Ian Begley of SNY reported that the Knicks are like the rest of the NBA: they will be interested in acquiring AD at the right price, possibly below his market value due to his injury history.

“I’m sure the Knicks would at least check in with Dallas if/when Anthony Davis becomes available. You may scoff at the idea, but the Knicks want to win a title this season. If Dallas is offering Davis at a below-market cost, I’m sure the Knicks will at least give the move some thought,” Begley wrote.

If the Mavericks are indeed looking to trade Davis, they might want to increase his value first by letting him recover from his injury and making him play games. He was averaging 20.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.2 blocks before going down with the calf strain.
