Texas quarterback Arch Manning had a very different take on his performance after the Longhorns‘ decisive 38-7 victory over the Spartans. While Steve Sarkisian praised Manning’s game, the quarterback’s own reaction caught fans off guard.
Why Arch Manning Called His Own Game ‘Sloppy’
In an interview on the field immediately after the game, Manning said he played sloppy and wasn’t pleased with how he did, even compared to last week’s loss against Ohio State.
“Once again, not very good,” Manning said about how he played. “But, you know, we got to clean up a lot of things. Some guys made some plays, though, so that’s good. But, you know, it was a little sloppy.”
The first quarter of the game was tenuous at times, and Manning’s initial plays were shaky. But he seemed to fall into a better groove as the team hit its stride, only allowing the Spartans one touchdown in the entire game. But unlike Sarkisian, Manning emphasized that he was not at all pleased with his performance.
When asked what he improved upon compared to the Ohio State game, Manning still didn’t have kind words for himself.
“I thought I made more plays and attacked them more, but, you know, it was just sloppy all around,” he said.
Steve Sarkisian Saw Arch Manning’s Game Very Differently
Sarkisian’s assessment of the game was pretty much the opposite of what Manning said, he shared in an interview on the field right after the game.
“Well, I thought he had a really good game today,” Sarkisian said about Manning. “You know, I thought he took advantage of some balls down the field. Lesson learned on a protection breakdown, forcing the ball. Weâre gonna have some of those growing pains with him, but I thought he used his legs for the touchdown, threw the ball down the field well, and created some explosive plays.”
And Manning certainly did play a role in some explosive plays, like a pass to Parker Livingstone that led to an 83-yard touchdown.
Or Manning’s 20-yard rushing touchdown, which fans couldn’t stop talking about on social media.
Sarkisian said he was also pleased with the Longhorns’ defense.
“Well, this is a unique offense to defend, and so our ability to defend the pass and the run and obviously create the four turnovers is huge,” Sarkisian said.
Overall, Manning’s performance in the San Jose State game was a vast improvement over Ohio State, even though the game started a little shaky. He was able to make use of his legs again, which was a big point of pride for Longhorns fans last season. And he led the team to a decisive victory.
