The snooker World Championship is lined up for an intriguing session this evening.

Jones will need to brush this afternoon’s frames aside as he falls behind 7-1 against Wilson – marking the worst start in a Crucible final in 33 years.

And his opening performance in the first half of session has been scrutinised by BBC pundit and former World Champion Ken Doherty.

The Irish star said: “I feel terribly sorry for him at the moment he looks bereft of confidence, cutting a very lonely figure out there.

“And it does become embarrassing at times because you are expecting so much.

“He just hasn’t performed. He is a bit like a rabbit in the headlights.”

“He needs a frame just one frame, one frame out of this session.

“At least he can derive something from this. But at the moment he looks like a lost sheep.”

Luckily the Welshman was able to scrape a frame at the very end of the session.

But the 30-year-old could not have imagined a more terrible beginning to his first final at the World Snooker Championship.

The 150-1 pre-tournament outsider, decided against going to the practice table during the first mid-session break.

And fellow pundit and six-time world champion Steve Davis was unhappy with Jones’ decision.

The Nugget, 66, said: “He’s been sitting in his chair for four frames. Why would you not go to the practice table?

“I don’t understand why not. He’s absolutely not even got out of the blocks, and he’s expecting to pot what could be difficult shots.

“It’s a no-brainer to me to go to the practice table.”
