Bears Predicted to Cut Ties With Six-Year Veteran Despite Glaring Need

The Chicago Bears improved during the offseason, but it’s tough to say that the front office did all the right things. On paper, the Bears should be a better team, even if it’s just due to the coaching change with Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams taking a second-year leap.

If everything goes as planned for the Bears, there’s a chance this team could be a playoff squad. The team will need to make some tough decisions, cutting multiple players in the coming weeks and months.

Could Bears Make Surprising Cut?

When searching for potential cut candidates, ClutchPoints recently predicted that the Chicago Bears would cut ties with the six-year NFL veteran. That player is Travis Homer, a running back who appeared in 10 games for the Bears last season.

He only had six attempts for 23 yards, averaging 3.8 yards per carry. Throughout his career, Homer has been utilized on special teams and has performed decently. However, with the Bears’ running back room in a strange position, they could look to move on from him and add someone a bit better.

“Travis Homer re-signed with the Bears in free agency for a simple reason: familiarity. The versatile running back and special teams contributor had carved out a niche role and seemed like a safe depth option heading into the 2025 offseason. NFL backfields are fluid, though, and the Bears’ running back room is rapidly evolving.

“Though Chicago didn’t select a marquee name in the draft, they took a flier on Kyle Monangai. He is a productive back from Rutgers with solid burst and vision. More importantly, new running backs coach Eric Bieniemy is known for wanting multi-dimensional backs. He wants guys who can contribute in both the passing game and on special teams. Monangai fits that mold. Roschon Johnson remains in the mix as well, and UDFA Ian Wheeler is turning heads during minicamp,” they wrote.

Bears Still Have Question Marks at Running Back

Entering the 2025-26 season, if there’s one area the Chicago Bears still need to upgrade, it’s in the running back room. Pro Football Focus named them one of the worst running back rooms in the NFL, which is tough to disagree with, considering D’Andre Swift is their only competent back.

“If there is a remaining weakness for Chicago’s offense after a stellar offseason, it’s their running back unit,” Dalton Wasserman wrote.

“D’Andre Swift averaged just 3.8 yards per carry last season while earning a 65.7 PFF rushing grade. Roschon Johnson garnered a 76.0 PFF rushing grade, but he has tallied only 136 carries through two NFL seasons. The Bears also didn’t draft a running back until the seventh round, picking up Rutgers‘ Kyle Monangai.”

Swift is likely to get the bulk of carries this season, and that makes perfect sense. After debuting for Chicago last season, he proved to be a decent option.

A pro bowler during the 2023 season for the Philadelphia Eagles, Swift posted 959 yards and six touchdowns last season with the Bears. He averaged 3.8 yards per carry, which was the lowest in his career, but he improved in other areas and should have a strong second year with Ben Johnson.
